Proxy Racing and Cars

I really enjoy Proxy racing and I have entered several in the last few years.

What is Proxy Racing?.......It is buiding a car to a specific set of Rules, posting the car to a central point  for Scruteneering (or Tech Inspection), the car is then run in a series of races by guest drivers, points allocated according to finishing position which go towards a grand total for the race series. It is often accompanied by a
Concours d'Elegance competition for the best looking car.

It enables car builders from all over the World to compete on an even basis, without the expense of actually being there.

This form of racing is becoming ever more popular with  race series being held in America, UK and Australia. A new series being held in 2007 is even more ambitiuous as the series inludes races in the US,UK,Bahrain,Brazil,Italy,Canada,Slovakia and South Africa. It is known as the Global Proxy Race and promises to be a very exciting event.

Auslot Proxy Race - 2007

This is a proxy Race held on Australian tracks, a mixture of wood and plastic for non-mag cars up to 1972. The cars must have a standard chassis, so most cars are Fly Classic type cars.

My entry for the race is:-

Shell is a Fly Porsche 908 and chassis is standard Fly with glued rear motor pod. Very little lead is added. Motor is a Slot.it V12/3 (yellow endbell) with Slot.it gears, axles, bearings and guide.
Wheels are  BWA with cut down Fly wheels as inserts. Tyres are front, Slot.it zero grips and rears Ortmans.

Race 1 - Six Pines - 4th ( Fastest Qualifier)
Race 2 - Valley Raceway - 10th (Qualified 7th) O/A 7th
Race 3 - Outer Limits Raceway - 17th (Qualified 25th)O/A 10th
Race 4 -  New Warwick Farm  - 2nd(Fastest Qualifier)O/A 9th
Race 5 -  Emu Park- 2nd ( Fastest Qualifier)O/A 7th
Race 6 -  Erskine Park Raceway - 3rd (Qualified 4th)O/A 5th
Race 7 - Woodlands Speedway - 5th (Qualified 15th) O/A 5th
Race 8 - Slider Park - 8th(Qualified 5th) O/A 5th
Race 9 - Stratton Valley - 10th - O/A 6th
Race 10- Shelmore Park - 11th (Qualified 9th) - O/A 6th

This completes the series.

Forums Cup - NASCAR

What I know about NASCAR you could write on the back of a stamp. But one of the guys on SCI suggested running a Proxy race for NASCAR cars completly on Oval tracks so I thought I would have a go.
This is the car I built:-

I purchased the standard Scalextric inline car from Ebay for the sum of £6.75 !, then rebuilt it as above. As stock tyres had to be used in the series it was pointless fitting a high powered motor as it would spend the whole lap spinning the rear wheels. I decided to fit the Scaleauto 18K motor, which has plenty of torque and fair brakes. As it was much longer than the standard Scalextric Mabuchi motor the chassis was modified and the motor  fixed into position with JB Weld. Slot.it axles/bearings/pinion and gears were used and BWA Nascar wheels and inserts.

Results

The car finshed 7th overall after 9 rounds

Race Across America 2007

This years Race Across America has three classes, As well as the normal GTS and LMP (Magnet cars) class there is an open class for Non Mgnet cars with unlimited motors.

Global Proxy Race 2007

Another great race series, this time taking in five continents, over a nine month period

I'm looking forward to this one as I have the honour of hosting the UK round in April 2007.

My cars for this series are as follows:-

Prototype Class :- Ferrari 312P

Guide TSRF
Wheels/Inserts - BWA, cut down Fly.
Tyres - Scalextric front,Ortman Rears.
Magnet - Single Button mag in front of motor (Ugh!)

The car went really well on my track, but seems to have suffered in transit to the States!. In it's first race problems were experienced with both front and rear tyres rubbing on the bodywork and the magnet fell out, ending up trapped on the motor.....Ah well there is always next year.

The car finished 17th in Class.

GT Class - Ferrari 512BB

Shell - Carrera
Chassis - Modified Carrera with Slot.it inline pod.
Motor - Ninco NC5
Gears - Slot.it

My GTS and LMP entries:-

The GTS car is a Carrera Ferrari 575, repainted and fitted with a Slot.it HRS chassis, Slot.it 23K Universal motor and TSRF Guide.

2006 Auslot Proxy Race

This series was organised by Martin Phoenix for the Auslot Forum.

The cars had to be GT's from 1990 to present date and saw some wonderful cars taking part.
All the races took place in Australia on a variety of different track surfaces from Scalex Sport to wood.

My entry was a Ninco Callaway,  modified to comply with the rules:-

The chassis mods included cutting the original chassis to accommodate the Slot.it Sidewinder Motor pod, with a PCB extension to the rear.
The original motor used was a Scaleauto 25K, but I was not happy with the braking, so I changed this motor for a Slot.it 25K. Slot.it Guide, Gears and axles were fitted, together with Slotline Alloy wheels, kindly given to me by Kia Bach Anderson. Slot.it Zero Grips were used on the front and Ortman's on the rears.
The car was repainted in David Piper Green.

The race series consisted of 9 rounds, with 30 cars taking part. My car finished 10th overall.

2005 World Proxy Race - CanAm

This race was for CanAm cars, and my entry is below :-

The shell was a Fly Porsche 917 Spyder, with a lexan interior, mounted onto a TSRF chassis. Tuna Foam tyres were used on the rears fitted to  SCD rims.

The car was a poor performer, but at least kept going when others dropped out. Hence it's finishing position.

The car finished 13th out of 28 competitors.

2004 World Proxy Race

This Race series was held in America, Australia and the UK.

This was my entry for the event:-

My first entry into this type of event, and not the most sucsessful!, but it was a good to compete against some very good Scratchbuilders.
The car comprised of a very heavy Nissan 300 resin shell, modified with wide arches, (fenders or guards), to represent the cars that ran in the IMSA race series.

The chassis was a scratchbuilt PCB affair with a Slot.it motor pod, 25K motor and slot.it gears. Rear tyres were "Tuna" foam mounted on SCD wheels, the fronts were Slot.it Big Hubs. The car was pretty good to drive, but completley outclassed by the opposition, who were running superb brass chassis.

There were a total of 25 runners in the event and I finished 14th. To be fair not all the competitors that finished below me took part in all the races.

Other Proxy Races

Some Proxy Races are doomed to failure before they start and I have built cars to compete in Series that failed after a couple of rounds or never even got started!

I built this Ferrari 156 to compete in a series of races to be held in the US, which sadly  fell apart after only two races, the results of which we never knew. The cars were returned to their owners but only after some considerable time.

A great shame as it had the makings of a very good event.

The shell was a Supershells Ferrari 156 from the 60's, modified to accept a driver figure and additional detail.
The chassis was scrachbuilt from brass and piano wire, and it featured a Scalex MOTOGP motor mated to a Slot.it rear axle and crown wheel. I even managed to fit in a TSRF guide. The car went pretty well even though it was running on standard Ninco wheels and tyres.

Another Proxy series that never got underway was for small saloons. This was to be a fun event, where the cars bore little relation to their 1:1 counterparts.
My entry was to be this "beefed up" Mini Clubman:-

The "thing" sits on very large NSR wheels with very low profile rubber, it had a scratchbuilt PCB chassis and was powered by a Slot.it 23K motor.

In addition to these  ill-fated series I also took part in a "one-off" proxy race for Ford 3L cars. It was all very lighthearted and I think everybody enjoyed seeing what they could build from the standard Airfix kit.

PCB chassis with Slot.it pod and motor, Fly Classic Wheels.  I think it finished about 4th out of 10 entries but no one was really counting
.
