Scale Slot Car Racing

Magnets are for Motors!

Brabham BT 34 "Lobster Claw"

This car is a potential entry for a "Airbox F1! Proxy race.....i.e F1 cars from the early Seventies. The car uses a shortened Scalextric Classic Maclaren chassis, motor, wheels and front tyres. The shell is fibreglass from the Fitzpatrick "Classic" range. The rear wing is a highly modified Maclaren item as is the driver figure. Rear Tyres are Ortman.

Ford Fiesta XR2i

Another of my "salvaged from Ebay" specials....The only Scalextric parts I ended up retaining were the bodyshell, glazing and interior.
Chassis is one of my own inlines made from  PCB with a Slot.it pod. Motor is a Scaleauto 20K Long can and running gear is Slot.it as are the lightweight alloy wheels. Spotlights are from World Classics. Tyres are Slot.it fronts and Canadian Pauls Slot car shop rears.

Birkin Bentley

My entry for the Brooklands 2009 Feature race, is Tim Birkin's 1929 Bentley Special. The car is modelled on the original colour (French racing blue/Black chassis)  of the real car. The resin shell is by Penelope Pitlane as is the chassis, wheels and inserts. Motor is a Scaleauto 38K....(probanly way too powerful for this car), tyres are Ortman all round.

Rover BRM Turbine

Now this is an interesting car. The shell is  very old Supershells, that I found with a broken roof and glazing at a Swapmeet. I made a new roof section and lexan glazing to the sides and rear windows and refirbished the old "glass"  to the front. I fitted the shell to a cut down Scalextric F1 chassis complete with FF motor. The wheels are obviously not correct for the period or the car but I think it doesn't look too bad and the whole thing cost less than £10 to build.

Ford Mirage

This started out life as an old Scalextric Mirage which I modified to accept a Penelope Pitlane brass sidewinder chassis. Motor is a Scaleauto 25K and running gear is Slot.it front tyres are slot.it zero grips with Ortman rears. Inserts are cut down Fly classic wheels. Decals are Pattos.

Ford Falcon GTHO

This resin shell was given to me by Phil Kalbel when I visited him in Tasmania. The car is Allan Moffat's classic Ford Falcon which ran in the Australian Touring Car Championship.
The shell was heavily lightened, original bodymounts removed and the window openings reshaped to take flush glazing.
The car runs on a modified Penelope Pitlane Brass Sidewinder chassis with a Scaleauto 25K Yellow Can motor. All Gears, axles etc are Slot.it as is the guide and braids. Wheels are Penelope Pitlane with front Carrera stocker tyres. Rears are from Paul's in Canada and are glued to the rims for added security. The inserts are resin from Phil, modified to fit the wheels.
The car is painted in two coats of BL Targa Red with a finishing coat of Fiat Orange Red. Decals are a mixture of Patto's and my own. The silver "chrome like" paint on the bumpers is from the Games Workshop range.

Mckee Mk 6

This is a car I've built for a forthcoming CanAm Race at Wolverhampton.

The car is a Mckee CanAm car from the Sixties. The shell is resin from Resilent Resins in the States and is light and strong. The shell was opened up around the front top vent and fine mesh attached to the underside of the shell to form the grille. The interior is from an old MRRC car and came complete with correct Roll Bar. The engine detail is from my spares box. At the rear exhaust tubes were fabricated fromt round Plastistrut sections and attached to the shell with two part epoxy and further two areas of the rear panel were opened up and mesh inserted. The lower panels are reflective turkey foil stuck on with white PVA glue; this makes a good alternative to  very expensive Bare Metal Foil.
The car has a Penelope Pitlane brass sidewinder chassis, the rear axle runs in brass tube cut flush with the motor support bracket and soldered to the chassis. The front axle is also carried in brass tube for additional strength, as the original fixture is IMHO a little weak. . The motor used is a Scaleauto 29K Black Can and all running gear is Slot.it. The guide used is a Slot.it Deep Wood Universal with Slot.it tinned braids. The wheels are Super Wheels from Slot Car Corner in the States, front tyres are Slot.it zero grips and rears are from Paul's Slot Car Shop in Canada. The inserts from the wheels were turned down from Revell Monogram originals. Decals were mine with roundals/numbers from Pattos.

Lambourgini Diablo GTR

The shell started life as a Revell Snap-Tite kit that I bought on Ebay for £2:50, to which I fitted a RTR Slot.it HRS2 Sidewinder chassis, (another bargin Ebay buy for £23). The rear spoiler was originally a spare from a Slot.it Sauber Mercedes that I modified to fit the shell. I painted the wheels black, and although not a 100% accurate for this model, look pretty good, (IMHO). Rear tyres are from Pauls Slot car shop in Canada. The decals are in fact stickers that again I got from Ebay. I saw them advertised as 1/18th scale items for AutoArt models, so I contacted the Seller and asked if he could let me have a set in 1/32nd....No problem, and all for £6 including postage from Hong Kong. Two coats of Klear over the BMW Jet Black paint and they blend in just like decals.

Fiat 500 Abarth

This pretty little car is a Fiat 500, the shell is from OCAR and I fitted a shortened PCS 32 chassis to it. Motor is a 10K Scaleauto and Slot.it guide, axles and gears are fitted. frontwheels are BWA and rears Slot.it. Scalextrix minilete wheels were cut down as inserts. Front tyres are SCX and rears Ortman.

Fiat/Seat 124

I bought this Fiat/Seat shell from a Spanish Member of Slot Forum. It is one of the magazine Kit cars that are so popular in Spain but unobtainable in the UK.
The shell is made by SCX for Altaya and comes complete with interior. I fitted a PCS32 chassis to it via three Plastistrut mounting tubes, secured to the shell with two part epoxy. The motor is a standard 18K Scalextric Mabuchi. Guide, Axles and gears are Slot.it. Wheels and cast metal inserts are Penelope Pitlane. Spotlights are from World Classic. Front tyres are PCS and rears are Ortman.

Lister "Knobbly" Jaguar

This is my entry for the 2009 International Proxy race. The Series is for Pre-'63 Sports/GT cars and they have to use a "control" rear tyre, in this case the Ninco 7mm Classic. As with these tyres it can be difficult to acheive grip on wooden tracks, (and the majority of tracks in the series are of wooden construction), it is challenging to say the least and should prove a competitive series.
The shell for the car is from Resilient Resins, and the driver figure is a modified MRRC Cobra driver. The chassis is scratchbuilt from PCB, and has a BWA brass front bracket for guide and front axle and a Slot.it "offset" inline pod. The car is powered by a Ninco NC8, ( this class of engine is required under the requlations), Slot.it axles and Offset crown are used. Wheels are Penelope Pitlane with their white metal "Dunlop pattern" inserts.

1962 Lotus 19

This is a Resilient Resins shell that I bought some time ago, and makes an ideal car for me to enter in the 2009 Wolves SCCA/Can Am event.
The car is based on Dan Gurney's famous Sebring car...
The chassis is a hybrid of a TSRF rear and centre section mated to a Fly front end, it seems to work very well, the join is made with wooden inserts and JB Weld. Motor is a Scaleauto 35K Red Can. Wheels are BWA '02's with PCS front tyres and Ortman rears.
The guide is a Slot.it universal.
The interior came from a Fly Porsche and the roll bar is constructed from brass rod with a soldered joint at the branch.
Patto's decals.

1912 Booklands Rolls Royce

Not the usual type of car I build, but I needed a car to race at the Wolverhampton Pre '38 Race meeting, and this "offset" driving position Rolls fitted the bill.
The resin shell is from Penelope Pitlane as are the fittings and wheel discs.
The chassis is a two part brass rod structure powered by a Scaleauto 20K Grey can Motor. The chassis has a brass weighting plate to lower the centre of gravity. All running gear is Slot.it. Wheels are Penelope Pitlane Vintage Issue. Tyres are Ortman and guide is TSRF with Parma braids.

1977 Renaul Alpine A310

This is a Protoslot kit that I managed to source from Ebay for less than half the normal price!. A Superb looking kit and well up to Protoslot's normal very high standards.
A Slot.it HRS chassis was fitted. The standard chassis needed modifying in order to reduce the wheelbase. This was done by elongating the two front axle mount slots. The axle holder also needed narrowing. Body mounting is via two Plastistrut tubes, one uses the rear HRS mounting point and the other uses a new hole drilled in the base of the chassis.
Motor is the  Slot.it V12/2 25K "white" enbell, mounted in a sidewinder configeration, with Slot.it gears and axles.
The wheels were purchased from US Ebay and were so similar to the Protoslot inserts that I deemed them not necessary. Front tyres are Racer and rears are Ortman "blues". Guide is Slot.it deep wood.

1977 Wolf Dallara

I love CanAm cars and this is an unusual one and rarely modelled.
I found the kit while scanning through Pendle Slot Cars Special offers section, they had this BUM shell, together with a chassis for sale at an amazing £4 !. Although I wasn't expecting a great deal from the kit, (I've bought BUM cars before!), I couldn't  resist buying it.
When it turned up I was horrified to find the shell was made from something similar to polythene.....Pre coloured blue. The spoiler was completly wrong and there was no sign of the very important front spoiler.
I thought I would give it a go to see how it turned out.
The BUM chassis was supplied in several parts, so I stuck it together and trimmed it to shape. It is an inline designed to take a standard "S" can motor, to my relief the back axle supports were able to take Slot.it bearings. I fitted these together with Slot.it axle and crown. The motor chosen was the Scaleauto 20K, "Silver".
I had to fabricate two body mounting tubes, I used Plastistrut fixed to the shell with JB Weld.

The front Slot.it axle runs in a brass tube supported on modified chassis shoulders. A Slot.it deep wood guide and braids are fitted.
The wheels were a real headache to get right. The fronts are very small and there is not a lot of suitable wheels out there. In the end I found that Slot.it wheels and tyres from the front of the Ferrari 312PB kit were just about the right size. Rear wheels are BWA '05's with Ortman Fly Classic size tyres. Rear inserts are Slot.it Gold BBS, cut to size.
The rear spoiler is the spare kindly supplied by Slot.it with their Sauber Mercedes. The front spoiler was made from bits and pieces from my spares box.
I primed the shell with Automotive white primer, which surprisingly seemed to stick well to the shell and finished the paintwork  with three coats of BMW "Jet Black". The decals were supplied with the kit and are sealed with "Klear".
The car is a good performer and makes a neat addition to my CanAm collection.

1975 Ford Capri RS 3100

The resin shell for this car was given to me by Phil Kabfel following my visit to his track in Tasmania. It is a recreation of Allan Moffat's RS 3100 which he had many battles with his arch rival Bob Jane, in the Australian Touring Series.
The shell sits on a modified Slot.it Mercedes Sauber anglewinder chassis, (shortened and narrowed), and features a Scaleauto 23K "long can" motor. Slot.it gears, axles, guide and  front wheels are used. BWA rear wheels with Ortmans plus Slot.it zero grip fronts complete the running gear.
The inserts are modified Slot.it Porsche 956 items.Headlights are from Slotbug and are Scalextric Mini-Cooper units.
The decals were made for me by Gary Skipp (LMP on Slotforum) and I'm very grateful as they allowed  me to finish the car.

1960 Saab 96

This car represents the 1961 RAC Rally Saab 96. It is an Ocar resin kit built on a PCS32 chassis.
Motor is a Mabuchi and pinion is MRRC. Crown gear/bearings and axles are Slot.it. Guide and braids are MRRC.
Shell is an excellent quality casting and etched metal grille, chromed white metal bumpers and plastic spotlights included.
Vac formed glass is moulded to the correct profile and a simple lexan interior provided. Healights are Scalextric Mini-Cooper items from Slotbug.

1985 Porsche Turbo

This is a Japanese Arii kit of one of my favorite cars. This particulasr livery featured on a car entered in the German Sports Car championship.
The kit sits on a shorted Scalextric "Black windowed" Audi TT chassis. All running gear is Scalextric, the standard wheels being "hollowed" out to allow the fitment of cut down Slot.it wheel inserts. Guide and braids are Slot.it and the interior is from my scrapbox, as is the driver figure. Decals are a mixture of DCM and Pattos. Front tyres are Scalextric and rears Ortmans.

1964 Jaguar MkII 3.8

This is a resin shell from Spanish manufacturers A2M. Like most of their products, the resin is very thick and the shell is distorted, requiring correction before finishing. No vac-formed glass is provided instead you need to make the individual glass panes from a single sheet of flat acetate.
Chassis is PCS32 with a standard Mabuchi motor. Pinion is MRRC, as is the guide/braids. Crown wheel, axles and bearings are Slot.it and wheels are PCS. Front tyres are PCS rears are Ortman.

1978 Vauxhall Chevette HS

This car was built from a World Classic resin shell. It has a PCS 32 chassis , Scalextric Mabuchi motor, MRRC guide and pinion, Slot.it Crown Gear and axles.
The wheels are Slot.it rears and BWA fronts. Gom Minilite replica wheels have turned down as inserts.
Tyres are Ortman rears with SCX fronts.
Decals are World Classics plus a few of mine.

1959 Austin Healey 3000

This car started life as a Pink Kar Austin Healey. I cut out the undersides of the shell removing all the old cast plastic mounting  brackets.
I constructed a new chassis from BWA front/rear brackets and , brass rod and sheet. New mounting tubes were constructed from Plastistube and fixed with JB Weld. Lead weighting has been added behind the guide and on both side pans.

Motor is one of the low powered BWA mini-motors with a Scalextric MOTOGP pinion and slot.it crown. BWA wheels are used with cut down pink kar wheels used as inserts. Front tyres are PCS and rear Australian MJK's. Guide is Slot.it deep wood. Original stick on racing numerals and roundels have been replaced with Patto's decals.

Porsche 718/2

This is a car I've built for the 2008 Vintage Race Across America Proxy Race, which for this year is for 61-65 single seater F1 cars.
The chassis is scratchbuilt brass using BWA front and rear brackets, Slot.it, gears and axles and TSRF guide. The motor for the car is the BWA FF can slimline motor which has a AB Slotsport spacer fitted to accommodate a standard Slot.it pinion. This motor is one of the two standard motors that may be used in the event. Wheels are currently PCS with their make front tyres and Ortman rears. These are not correct for this car and will be changed for BWA 32002's with BWA Porsche inserts prior to the start of the Race Series. The shell is from the Classic Range and is made from fibreglass.
The car is painted in Halfords Fiat Orange Red to represent the 1962 German Grand Prix car of Count Carel de Beaufort.

1966 Chaparral 2D

This car is made from an OCAR resin shell, mated to a standard Scalextric Porsche Boxster "cheepie" chassis.
All the running gear is Scalextric except the rear tyres which are Ortman. The Chaparral inserts are modified BWA thinned down to fit the Scalextric Hubs.
Decals are OCAR and Pattos. Paint is Vaukhall Glacier White, but with hindsight I would have used a "brighter" white.

1965 Sunbeam Alpine

This started life as a OCAR Sunbeam Tiger shell, but I wanted to build it as a "Weekend " SCCA racer, so I completed it as a soft top , built a rollbar out of brass rod and added a paper cockpit cover.
The chassis is a PCS32 with modified side pans, motor is Scalextric Mabuchi, Rear axle is Scalextric, Front axle is Ninco, guide is TSRF, braids AB Slotsport, Wheels are Ninco Classics with Ninco front tyres and Ortman rears. Decals are a mixture of OCAR and Pattos.

1958 Lister-Chevrolet

Here's a chunky car!...just like the original. I based this model on one of the restored Lister Chevrolets that run in the Historic Series in the States.
The shell is fibreglass from Tony Condon. The cockpit cover being made from black card.
The chassis and all running gear is from the Scalextric "beginers" range of heavy duty cars with blacked out windows. These are great value for money and can be picked up very cheaply on Ebay. New body mounts were made from Plastistrut tubing and brass tube. Guide used is a Slot.it Deep wood unit with racing braids. Rear tyres are Ortmans.

1955 Talbot Lago T26

This is a glassfibre shell from the AA Bodies range of shells. The chassis is a Slot.it inline HRS with a Scaleauto 29K Black Can Motor.
Gears/Axles/Bearings/Guide are all from the Slot.it range.
Wheels and front tyres are PCS,  rear tyres are Ortman.
It was necessary to construct a new grill and bottom support as the original disintigrated whilst being sanded. The new grill is made from fine mesh and the bottom support from brass rod.

1985 Rover 3.5 SDI

I've always wanted to build one of these Rovers, so when I got hold of an old Scalextric Police car shell I thought I would give it a go.
First off this shell came with black glass, so I had to make up a new set of glazing from scrap material that you can  find supporting new shirts!. Also the large hole in the roof, where the flashing blue lights were fitted,  needed filling. I used a combination of JB Weld and Halfords small dent repair epoxy.
The chassis used was a Fly 512S with a hole cut into it to accommodate a Slot.it Inline motorpod. Motor is a Scaleauto 29K Black Can. Gears/axles/pinion are all slot.it. Wheels are also Slot.it, fronts being equiped with low profile zero grips. Rear tyres are Ortman
Guide is a modified Slot.it Deep wood unit with Slot.it Silver Braids.
Car is sprayed with Halfords Vauxhall Glacier White and Nissan Red. Decals are Pattos.

Aston Martin DB4 Zagato

A OCAR resin shell running on a Penelope Pitlane Brass chassis. Interior is black card with resin driver figure added.Guide is Ninco Sprung, Motor, gears, axles are scalextric. Wheels are AB Slotsport Monopostos with cut down Ninco Classic wheels as inserts. Front tyres are Ninco 7mm and rears Ortmans.

1935 Bugatti Atlantic

The shell is fibreglass from the Fitzpatrick "Classic" range and to be honest required a lot of sanding and filling to get it into an acceptable shape.
The chassis used is one of the Penelope Pitlane Brass adjustible units fitted with a standard Scalextric Mabuchi motor.
Rear axle is Scalextric, as are the bearings. Front axle is Slot.it. Wheels are Penelope Pitlane classic wires. Front tyres are Ninco's and rears are the Ortman Specials produced for Mac Pinches Pre-War cars. Guide is TSRF.
The guide is "almost" underneath the shell, as I extended out the front valance of the shell with Plasticard and blended it into the shell with Holts filler.
Paint is from Halfords and is a Ford colour, (the closest I could get to Bugatti Blue!), and decals are from MRE.

Lola T70 Spyder

A Protoslot kit featuring a modified Fly Lola T70 chassis. Motor is a Slot.it 25K, gears are Slot.it.
Wheels and inserts are BWA with Slot.it front tyres and Ortman rears.

1967 Paxton STP Turbine Car

 .

Another very interesting car to add to my very small Indy car collection . It is a Protoslot kit of the '67 STP Paxton car. This model uses one of Protoslots "offset" motor metal chassis and performs very well. All parts used are Protoslot with the exception of the motor and pinion which are Scalextric MOTOGP units. The tyres are from BRM and seem to grip very well on wood.
A lot of discussion on various Forums about the colour of this particular model, some consider it far too red, and perhaps should be more "orangey", but I'm not sure, as I have only seen photographs of the restored 1:1 car.

1966 Ford J car

This is a Maxi-Models kit, running on a modified Scalextric GT 40 chassis. Motor is standard Mabuchi. Guide is a Ninco sprung unit.
I had a bit od a disaster when painting this shell as when I applied the blue coat it reacted with the white paint and was a real mess!. I had to srtrip the paintwork down to resin and start all over again.....I guess these things sometimes happen!.
I was also not very happy with the method of mounting the shell to the chassis, so I cut out the resin brackets and made some new ones from two diameters of Plastistube.
Tyres are Scalextric at the front and Ortman rears.

Aston Martin DB4 Zagato

This is an old OCAR shell, (the new ones are much thinner), mounted onto a PCS 32 chassis. Motor is Scalextric Mabuchi with a combination of Scalextric and Slot.it gears. Axle is Slot.it with Scalextric bronze bearings. Guide is a Ninco Sprung unit. Wheels are Penelope Pitlane with etched inserts. Front tyres are Ninco rears Ortman.

Lolat T70 - Surtees

Another Protoslot resin kit.

This is a Protoslot model of the great Mark Donohue's  CanAm car that dominate the 1973 Season.
Chassis is a Slot.it HRS, motor a 25K Scaleauto, gears/axles/guide are Slot.it. Wheels are BWA with Slot.it zero grips on the front and Ortmans on the rear.
I think it is the most difficult Protoslot kit I have built so far, the decals being very difficult to apply correctly.

1967 Chevron B8

I built this car for the Wolverhampton Classic Le Mans Race in  three days. In the end I didn't use it!. The car is based on the 1967 Le Mans entry and carries the correct race number and stripes, but as I only had a black and white picture as reference, I can't be sure the car colour is correct.
The shell is fibreglass from AA Bodies and has a lexan top section. The chassis is scratchbuilt from PCB and brass. Motor is Ninco NC5. Gears and Axles are from Slot.it. Guide is TSRF with Parma braids. Wheels are BWA '05 rears and '03 fronts, front tyres are Slot.it zero grips and rears are Ortman Fly Classic Slicks. Wheel inserts were made from "cut down" Fly Classic Porsche wheels. Decals are a mixture of Patto's and my own.

1967 Lola T70 Spyder - Sunoco

This is a Protoslot kit mounted on a modified Fly Lola T70 chassis. The front of the chassis had to be reprofiled, the rear section removed and the width reduced. The car is powered by a Scaleauto 25K motor (yellow can) and gears, axles, bearings and guide are from Slot.it.
The wheels are BWA, 32005's on the rear and 32003's on the front. The Lola inserts are resin BWA products. Tyres are Slot.it zero grips on the front and Ortman Fly Classic slicks on the rear.
The windscreen was fitted to the bodyshell with Klear Floor cleaner, a tip from Phil Smith, and works much better than traditional PVA adhesive.

Spyker GT2

A Protoslot kit, which uses a shortened Slot.it sidewinder HRS chassis. Motor is Scalex Sprort Orange Can 25K with Slot.it Axles and gears.

The car is finished as the winner of the 1963 Tourist Trophy race, entered by the Rob Walker team and driven by Stirling Moss.

1957 Maserati Birdcage

I've worked on this car for several months trying to determine the best way of building it.
The shell is a fibreglass AA Bodies one, which I picked up at Pendle a few years ago. The chassis is a much modified PCS 32 unit, with a Beardog Mini motor fitted as a anglewinder. The chassis was cut to accommodate the motor which was then secured with two part epoxy. The gears are TSRF, the alloy spur gear being chosen over the normal plastic variety.
The shell was modified by removing the moulded "framework" inside the cockpit and openining out the top, side and radiator vents. The driving light apatures were also opened to allow the fitment of Ninco light units from the classic Corvette .
A Ninco spring guide was used with Ninco racing braids.
The interior was created with plasicard and black card and a modified MRRC driver figure. The stainless framework was built from piano wire soldered together to form the correct bar alignment and fixed into position with two part epoxy.
The front wheels are AB Slotsport and the rears BWA with Ninco front tyres and Ortman rears. Ninco classic wheels were cut down as inserts.
Paint is Nissan Red and decals are from Patto's

Axles and gears are Slot.it, Wheels and inserts are Protoslot and tyres are Slot.it zero grip fronts and Ortman rears.
This car requires the front spoiler area and the rear undertray to be painted. A new card interior was constructed to replace the resin Protoslot interior.

1934 AutoUnion Type A

The car has a resin shell (TRRC) and simple brass scratchbuilt chassis, featuring front and rear BWA brackets.
Scalex MOTOGP with Scalex/Slot.it gears are used. Guide is Slot.it with SCB Braids.

Paint is Audi Laser red and decals are from Beardog.
The top rear suspension support rods were constructed from piano wire.

1972 Porsche 908 LH

A Protoslot resin kit fitted to a Slot.it HRS chassis. Motor is an inline Slot.it Boxer. Wheels are BWA with modified Lola inserts. Front tyres are Scalextric GT 40's with Ortman rears. The large yellow area was supposed to  have been a decal, but it just didn't fit or look right, so I removed it and sprayed the area instead which gave a much better finish.
Although I'm pleased with the car, with hindsight it would have been much easier to fit a standard Slot.it motor as the Boxer requires much more of the interior to be removed to get it all to fit together.
This car is the current lap record holder on my track.

Chaparral 2E

This is a Resilient Resins shell of the Chaparral 2E.
I have cut out all the grille openings in the shell, added thin Plasticard liners and used auto repair mesh for the finished grilles. The front "teardrop" grilles were made the same way, but were a lot more difficult due to the curvature of the front wing. The V8 engine detail is a white metal casting I had in my spares box.

The rear wing supports are thin brass section bonded to the underside of the shell with two part JB Weld. The wing is a temporary unit from an old  Scalextric Le Mans Jaguar, and will be replaced with a Resin casting when it's available. At the rear the exhaust system came from the parts box. Wheels and inserts are BWA. The inserts were filed until only the spokes remained. The inside of the wheel was then painted black and the inserts silver.
